About Thermosynechococcus elongatus BP-1

About Thermosynechococcus elongatus BP-1 is a unicellular thermophilic cyanobacterium isolated at Beppu hot spring in Japan. This strain has become a new model cyanobacterium because techniques for genetic engineering have been developed. It is suggested that this strain has branched at a very early stage of evolution of cyanobacteria based on the 16S rRNA sequence.
